NOTE: The following
is only a brief synopsis of my workflow. It is not meant to be a
specific guide to using a 3D program or an in-depth guide to using
Pepakura. Click on each image to open a larger version in a new
browser window.
1. Create your 3D model.
Or, if you have a 3D model you've obtained elsewhere,
open it in your 3D software. If you're using a model that was
designed for Games (Low Poly) or for production illustration or
animation (High Poly) you may find less than desired results when you
import it into Pepakura. When you are satisfied with your model export
it into a file format that Pepakura can import .*I use .3ds and I also
export the textures along with the meshes as my 3D software has
excellent texture alignment.
2. Open your model in Pepakura.
Once you've opened your model in Pepakura
Designer (Pepakura Viewer is just that: a viewer and printer) use
Pepakura's "Specify Cut Edge" tool to define the layout and
section of the model. The best advice I can give is to look at and
build the types of model you want to design; i.e. figures, vehicles,
planes, etc. See how the parts are laid out and the model is
sectionalized. The orange lines in the image indicate cut edges. If you
imported your model without textures this would be a good time to apply
them.
3. Create your pattern.
After you have created your Pepakura development
SAVE YOUR WORK. You can always refer back to this file and eliminate
having to redo many of your initial cuts. You may find some unexpected
cuts or folds or tabs that need to be created. Make the
corrections. You are now ready to print and Beta build your model.
